History

The towering defenseman enjoyed a stellar rookie year with the Big Red that culminated with a selection to the ECACHL All-Rookie Team. Pokulok missed nearly the entire month of February as well as the ECACHL conference quarterfinals due to injury. He posted ten points (three goals, seven assists) in 26 appearances this season. Two of his three goals came on the power play.

2005-06: Member of the 2006 Canadian WJC team.

2006-07: Turned pro in 2006-07 after two years at Cornell.  Suffered a concussion in the first game of the season with the Hershey Bears.  He returned in January and was reassigned to the ECHL South Carolina Stingrays. Suffered another concussion after playing about a month.

Suffering a debilitating concussion early in the 2006-07 season with the Hershey Bears, and a second one shortly after recovering from the first, have put Pokulok's career in jeopardy.  Pokulok’s use of his size, matched with his good stickhandling ability, made him one of the best defensive prospects in the Capitals' system before the injuries.

Talent Analysis

Pokulok’s 6’5 230 lbs. frame give him the makings of an outstanding two-way defenseman. Pokulok is very sound defensively and is willing to jump up into play and help create offense. He uses his enormous size and strength quite well, whether it’s protecting the puck or defending against an opposing forward. He possesses a very heavy shot and a long reach. He handles the puck well and has good passing skills. One area that Pokulok will need to improve is his foot speed. He skates with powerful strides, but is on the slow side. While he has shown that he can deliver some solid checks, he could stand to be more physical as well.
