History
Despite the disappointing eighth place finish for his University of Massachusetts team, P. J. Fenton enjoyed an outstanding freshman season in 2004-05 that culminated in his selection to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. He was also named the Minutemen’s Rookie of the Year at their season-ending awards ceremony. P. J. Fenton is the son of former NHLer Paul Fenton. The younger Fenton finished the season with 25 points (13 goals, 12 assists), which was second on the team. He was one of only five players to appear in all 38 games for UMass this season. He finished second on the team in points and goals. Fenton finished first in Hockey East conference scoring among rookies with 17 points.
Talent Analysis
Fenton is a gritty, grinding type of forward. He is very good around the net and along the boards. He plays tremendously well in tight situations. He is fiercely competitive, aggressive on the forecheck, and is willing to get involved in the physical side of the game. Fenton possesses a great work ethic and plays well at both ends of the ice. He has a good quick release to his shot. Fenton is a smart player who sees the ice well. He is also quite good on face-offs. The biggest knock on Fenton is his strength, particularly in his legs. While he is a good skater, his skating is not particularly strong.
Future
Fenton isn’t likely to be a huge offensive contributor at the next level, but he brings so much more to
the table.
