History
Wiikman appeared in 75 games with HPK Hameenlinna of the Finnish Elite League (SM-liiga) over three seasons from 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2007. While with the team, he recorded a 38-16-20 record, a 2.30 goals against average, and a .922 save percentage, as well as five shutouts. During the 2005-06 season, Wiikman led Hameenlinna to their only SM-liiga championship in the club’s 62-year history.
2007-08: After attending and impressing at the Rangers Fall 2007 Training Camp, Wiikman was signed to an AHL contract. Originally signed to be the backup for Al Montoya in Hartford, Wiikman spent some time last season playing for the ECHL Charlotte Checkers, and then in February 2008 became the undisputed number one netminder in Hartford after Montoya was traded to Phoenix. Signed directly with the Rangers in April of 2008.
Talent Analysis
Wiikman displays quick lateral movement and excellent positioning. Not a flashy netminder, he stays square to the shooter and is not afraid to challenge the opposition.
Future
With the Rangers resigning NHL backup Steve Valiquette, it is very likely that Wiikman will return to Hartford for the entire 2008-09 season. He will have some competition from Matt Zaba for the Wolf Pack No. 1 netminder position this season.
