History

In 70 games, Ty Wishart scored five goals and 32 assists while collecting 68 penalty minutes. During his rookie season, he played in 58 games, scoring once and adding seven assists. Wishart’s major statistical improvement occurred in the plus/minus category where he finished the current campaign at +12 after a -14 rating in his first season.

The 6’5, 195-pound native of Comox, BC, established himself as a solid physical defender in Prince George, playing in all situations against many of the B.C. Division’s top forwards. Major injuries to veterans Andy Rogers (TB) and Jesse Dudas (2006) meant more ice time for Wishart, who responded well for the Cougars, who made the playoffs for the first time since the 2001-2002 season.

After the Cougars playoff exit, Wishart was named to the U18 National Team and competed in the World Championship tournament in Sweden in April. Wishart also played in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects game in Ottawa this season.

2006-07: Wishart had some injury troubles early on, resulting in a rocky start to the season with Prince George. The 6’5 203 lbs defenseman put it all behind him, however, in a season that earned him honors as a second team All-Star for the WHL’s Western Conference and his first NHL contract. Wishart surpassed his point totals of the previous two seasons, with a total 49 points in 62 games and a +15.

Acquired in a trade with San Jose with Matt Carle and draft picks for Dan Boyle and Brad Lukowich in 2008.

Talent Analysis

He has the size, mobility and the hockey sense to be a dominant defenseman, and is regularly matched against some of the opponents’ top players. In addition to his strength as a defenseman, he has a powerful shot and strong offensive capability.

Future

If he continues to develop, Wishart could well be a top pairing defenseman in the NHL.
